One of the best things about running your trading on a VPS is that you can check on it from anywhere. Your EAs keep running in the datacenter, and a phone in your pocket becomes a window onto the same terminal you would see at your desk.

If you last set this up on an iPhone or iPad a while ago, the app has changed. Microsoft retired the “Remote Desktop” app for iOS and iPadOS and replaced it with Windows App. Older guides — including screenshots in many broker help centres — still refer to the old name, which causes a lot of confusion when you search the App Store.

This guide covers the current setup from start to finish, then the settings and habits that matter specifically for trading.

What You Need

  • An iPhone or iPad running iOS or iPadOS 16.0 or later
  • Windows App from the App Store (Microsoft’s replacement for the Remote Desktop app)
  • Your VPS’s IP address or hostname
  • Your VPS username and password, from your FXVPS welcome email or client area

That is all. There is nothing to install on the VPS side — Remote Desktop is already enabled on FXVPS instances.

Step-by-Step: Adding Your VPS

  1. Install Windows App. Search for “Windows App” in the App Store and install Microsoft’s app.

  2. Open it and add a PC. On first launch you are prompted to add a connection. Otherwise, tap the plus (+) icon on any tab, then choose Add PC.

  3. Enter the PC name. Type your VPS’s IP address or hostname. If your provider has given you a non-standard RDP port, append it after a colon, for example 203.0.113.10:3389 — Microsoft’s documentation supports this format.

  4. Add your credentials. You can store your username when adding the PC or enter it at connection time. Accepted formats include user_name, domain\user_name and user_name@domain.com. For most VPS logins, the plain username (for example Administrator) is correct.

  5. Give it a display name. Something like “FXVPS London – Live EAs” is far more useful than an IP address, especially if you have more than one VPS.

  6. Review display and resource settings. Local resource redirection — things like clipboard or storage access — is off by default. Leave it that way unless you specifically need it.

  7. Tap Add & Connect. Or tap Add, then find the VPS on the Devices tab and tap Connect. Enter your password when prompted.

  8. Accept the certificate prompt the first time you connect. VPS instances typically use a self-signed certificate, so the app will ask you to confirm. Check you typed the correct IP before accepting.

Making It Usable on a Small Screen

A MetaTrader terminal designed for a 27-inch monitor is not pleasant on a six-inch phone. A few adjustments make a big difference.

Choose the Right Resolution

In the connection’s display settings you can influence how the remote desktop is sized. A resolution that matches your device makes text readable without constant zooming, but it can also make MetaTrader rearrange its windows. An iPad — especially with a keyboard and trackpad — is genuinely workable for adjusting an EA’s inputs or managing several charts. An iPhone is best for quick status checks: is the terminal connected, is AutoTrading on, what is open. Plan for that rather than fighting the screen.

Prefer Landscape

MetaTrader’s layout was built for wide screens. Rotating to landscape gives you the chart, the Market Watch and the Trade tab in something close to their normal proportions.

Disconnect, Never Sign Out

This is the single most important point in the guide. When you are finished, close the session using the app’s disconnect option or simply leave the app. Do not use Start → Sign out on the VPS. Signing out ends the Windows session and closes every program running in it — including MetaTrader and all your EAs. Disconnecting leaves everything running. Do Not Shut Down From Your Phone

Similarly, never choose Shut down from the VPS Start menu. A shut-down VPS cannot be restarted by reconnecting with Windows App. If you need to restart, use Restart, and make sure your terminals are configured to auto-start.

Watch Your Mobile Data

An RDP session sends screen updates, so data use rises with how much is changing on screen. A static chart view is light; scrolling through charts or watching fast-moving tick charts uses more. Do Not Confuse Your Phone’s Connection With the VPS’s

  • Use a strong, unique VPS password and keep your phone locked with a passcode or Face ID.
  • Avoid entering credentials on public Wi-Fi you do not trust, or use a reputable VPN when you do.
  • Leave clipboard and storage redirection off unless you actively need them.
  • If you lose the phone, change your VPS password from another device promptly.

Troubleshooting

“Couldn’t connect” or a timeout. Check that you entered the IP address exactly and that your phone has internet. Try connecting on Wi-Fi rather than mobile data, or vice versa, to rule out a network restriction.

Password accepted on desktop but not in the app. Check the username format. Try the plain username without a domain prefix, and watch out for auto-capitalisation on the first letter.

The session opens but everything is tiny. Adjust the display settings for that connection, or zoom with a pinch. On iPad, a keyboard and trackpad make navigation much easier.
