EA Licences on a VPS: MQL5 Market Activations, Account Locks, and What Breaks When You Move

You bought an Expert Advisor. It runs on your home PC. You rent a VPS, copy the EA file across, attach it to a chart, and get a sad face in the corner and a line in the Experts log that says something like “not licensed”, “invalid account”, or nothing at all.

The EA is not broken and neither is the VPS. Commercial EAs are protected, and the protection is tied to something: your MQL5 account, your trading account number, the machine itself, or a vendor’s licence server. Moving to a VPS changes at least one of those, and sometimes it quietly uses up an entitlement you cannot get back.

This guide explains the four common licensing models, how each behaves on a VPS, and the order to do things in so you do not waste activations.

📊 Key Stat: Products bought on the MQL5 Market come with a limited number of activations set by the seller, with a minimum of five. Each activation is bound to one computer’s hardware and operating system. There is no “deactivate” button that hands one back.

The Four Ways EAs Are Licensed

1. MQL5 Market Activations

If you bought or rented the EA through the Market tab in MetaTrader or on mql5.com, the product is tied to your MQL5 community account. You cannot copy the file from one machine to another. The file is encrypted for the machine it was installed on, and a copied .ex4 or .ex5 from the Market folder will not load elsewhere.

To use it on a VPS, you install it again from inside the terminal on the VPS, and that consumes one activation.

Key facts:

  • An activation is per computer, not per terminal. Once a product is activated on a machine, you can use it in as many terminals and on as many trading accounts as you like on that same machine.
  • Activations are tied to hardware and operating system. A change to either can require a new activation.
  • Activations are not returned. Uninstalling the product or cancelling the VPS does not give the activation back.
  • Rented products follow the same rules for the length of the rental.

2. Account-Number Locks

Many independent vendors compile the buyer’s trading account number (or a list of them) into the EA, or check it against a licence key. The EA runs on any machine, but only on the account it was issued for.

This model is VPS-friendly: moving machines changes nothing. What breaks it is changing broker, opening a new account, or switching from demo to live, because the account number changes.

3. Hardware-Bound Licences

Some vendors generate a licence from a fingerprint of the machine: a disk serial, MAC address, Windows product ID, or a mix. You run a small tool, send the vendor the resulting code, and receive a key that works only on that machine.

This is the model most sensitive to VPS changes. A new VPS always has a new fingerprint. Occasionally, so does the same VPS after a rebuild or reinstall.

4. Online Licence Servers

The EA contacts the vendor’s server at start-up, usually through a DLL or a WebRequest call, and checks a licence key against an allowed number of concurrent installations. Many of these let you manage seats from a customer dashboard, which makes them the easiest to move, provided the EA can reach the internet and you have enabled what it needs.

💡 Tip: Not sure which model your EA uses? Look at how you received it. Installed from the Market tab: MQL5 activations. You sent the vendor your account number: account lock. You ran a “hardware ID” tool: hardware-bound. You received a licence key and the instructions mention “Allow DLL imports” or adding a URL to WebRequest: online licence server.

Installing an MQL5 Market EA on Your VPS

Do this in order and it takes five minutes.

  1. Connect to the VPS over RDP and open the MetaTrader terminal you will actually trade from.
  2. Sign in to your MQL5 account inside the terminal. In MT4 and MT5 this is under Tools, then Options, then the Community tab. Use the same MQL5 login you bought the product with.
  3. Open the Market tab in the Terminal (MT4) or Toolbox (MT5) panel and go to Purchased.
  4. Click Install next to the product. The terminal downloads it and uses one activation for this machine.
  5. Find the EA in the Navigator under Expert Advisors, in the Market folder, and attach it to a chart.
  6. Repeat step 4 in any other terminals on the same VPS. These installs do not use further activations, because the machine is already activated.

⚠️ Warning: Do not test a Market EA on a short trial VPS, then on a second provider, then on a third. Every new machine is an activation. Traders who shop around for a VPS with a paid EA installed can burn three or four activations in a week. Evaluate the VPS with a demo account and a free or self-written EA first, and install the paid product once you have decided where to stay.

What Can Trigger a New Activation on the Same VPS

Because the activation is bound to the machine’s hardware and operating system, a few events can make the terminal treat a familiar VPS as a new computer:

  • Reinstalling or rebuilding Windows on the VPS.
  • Upgrading the operating system version, such as moving from one Windows Server release to another.
  • Moving the VPS to a different location or host, which normally means a fresh server. See moving your trading VPS to a different location.
  • Significant changes to the virtual hardware presented to Windows.

Ordinary reboots, Windows updates, and MetaTrader build updates do not affect activations. Before you ask for any change that rebuilds the server, check how many activations you have left. If you are down to your last one, plan the change carefully.

If You Run Out of Activations

MQL5 does not top up activations on request. The practical routes are:

  • Contact the seller. Many sellers will help a genuine buyer, and some release new versions of a product in a way that renews activations for existing owners. This is at the seller’s discretion.
  • Check whether a rental is cheaper than a second purchase if you only need the product for a limited time.
  • Stop moving. Settle on one VPS and keep it.

Moving Account-Locked and Hardware-Locked EAs

Account-locked EAs need nothing from the vendor when you change machine. Copy the EA file into the MQL4/Experts or MQL5/Experts folder (File, then Open Data Folder), copy any set files and required indicators, restart the terminal, and attach it. If you are also changing broker or account, request an updated build or key for the new account number first. Our guide to migrating an EA between brokers covers the rest of that process.

Hardware-locked EAs need a new key for the new machine. The clean sequence is:

  1. Set up the VPS and install MetaTrader.
  2. Run the vendor’s hardware ID tool on the VPS, not on your home PC.
  3. Send the new ID to the vendor and ask for a licence transfer.
  4. Keep the old machine running until the new key arrives and the EA is confirmed working.

Online-licensed EAs usually need you to release the seat on the old machine first, either from the vendor’s dashboard or by removing the EA from its chart there. Then, on the VPS, enable what the EA requires: tick “Allow DLL imports” in the EA’s Common tab if the vendor’s instructions call for it, and add the licence server’s address under Tools, Options, Expert Advisors, “Allow WebRequest for listed URL”.

✅ Best Practice: Keep a plain text file on the VPS listing every commercial EA you run, its licensing model, the account numbers it is licensed for, the vendor’s contact address, and how many activations remain. When something stops working at 02:00 after a server change, that file is worth more than any backup.

Diagnosing a Licence Failure

When a paid EA will not run on the VPS, check these in order:

  1. The Experts and Journal tabs. Most licence checks print a message. Look for account, licence, expiry, or DLL wording. Our guide to reading MT4 and MT5 log files explains where to look.
  2. AutoTrading is enabled and the EA shows a smiley (MT4) or active icon (MT5).
  3. The account number matches the one the EA was licensed for, and you have not logged in to a demo account by mistake.
  4. DLL imports and WebRequest URLs are allowed if the EA needs them.
  5. The VPS clock is correct. Time-limited licences and online checks can fail on a machine with the wrong date. See time synchronization on a trading VPS.
  6. The MQL5 login in the Community tab is the buyer’s account, for Market products.

If all of that is right, send the exact log line to the vendor. “It does not work on my VPS” gets a slow answer. A copied error line gets a fast one.

Choosing a VPS With Licensing in Mind

Licensing is a reason to choose a VPS you intend to keep. A few things make that easier:

  • Pick the right location first. Changing location later means a new server and, for hardware-bound products, a new activation. Our guide to choosing the best VPS location helps you get it right the first time.
  • Start on a plan with headroom. Core ($29/mo, 2GB RAM, 1 vCPU) suits one or two terminals. Pro ($39/mo, 4GB RAM, 2 vCPUs) and Scaling ($79/mo, 8GB RAM, 4 vCPUs) suit larger setups. Details at /pricing/.
  • Use a full Windows VPS, not a hosting slot. MetaTrader’s built-in virtual hosting does not support DLL calls, which rules out many online-licensed EAs. A Windows VPS runs the complete terminal. We compare the two in FXVPS vs MetaTrader VPS.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does installing a Market EA on my VPS use an activation?

Yes. A VPS is a separate computer, so the first install on it uses one activation. Further terminals on the same VPS do not.

Can I copy the EA file from my PC to the VPS instead?

Not for MQL5 Market products. The file is tied to the machine it was installed on. For EAs you received directly from a vendor as a file, copying is fine, subject to the account or hardware lock.

Will rebooting my VPS use an activation?

No. Reboots, Windows updates, and terminal updates do not change the machine’s identity. Reinstalling Windows or moving to a new server can.

My EA is locked to my account number. Can I run it on my PC and VPS at once?

Technically it will load on both, but you should not. Two copies of the same EA on one account will double your trades. See running a standby VPS without doubling every trade.

Can the VPS provider see or copy my EA?

On a full Windows VPS you are the administrator and your files sit in your own Windows profile. Set a strong password and follow our VPS security hardening guide.
