How to connect to your VPS using Remote Desktop Program (RDP) from Android.

Being able to check on your trading VPS from your Android phone or tablet is one of the biggest advantages of running your Expert Advisors on a remote server. Whether you are commuting, travelling, or simply away from your desk, you can connect to your FXVPS server in seconds, verify your EAs are running, check open positions, or make quick adjustments. This guide covers the complete setup process for connecting to your VPS from any Android device.

What You Will Need

Before starting, gather the following from your FXVPS activation email:

  • VPS IP address — The server’s public IP (e.g., 123.45.67.89)
  • Port number — FXVPS uses port 41011 for RDP connections (not the default 3389)
  • Username — Your VPS login username
  • Password — Your VPS login password

💡 Tip: Take a screenshot of your activation email or save the credentials in a password manager on your phone. You will need them during setup, and typing long passwords on a phone keyboard is tedious.

Step 1: Install Microsoft Remote Desktop

The official Microsoft Remote Desktop app is free and provides the most reliable connection experience on Android.

  1. Open the Google Play Store on your Android device.
  2. Search for “Microsoft Remote Desktop” by Microsoft Corporation.
  3. Tap Install and wait for the download to complete.

When the app requests permissions, tap Accept. The app needs access to local storage (for saving connection files) and network access (to connect to your VPS).

⚠️ Warning: There are many third-party RDP apps on the Play Store, some of which contain ads or have limited functionality. Make sure you download the one published by Microsoft Corporation to avoid compatibility issues.

Step 2: Add Your VPS Connection

  1. Open the Microsoft Remote Desktop app.
  2. Tap the + button in the bottom-right corner, then select Add PC (or Desktop in older versions).
  1. In the PC name field, enter your VPS IP address followed by a colon and the port number:
    123.45.67.89:41011
Replace 123.45.67.89 with your actual VPS IP from the activation email.
  1. Tap User account and select Add user account. Enter your VPS username and password, then tap Save.

  2. Optionally, tap Friendly name and give the connection a recognizable name like “FXVPS Trading” or “My Forex VPS.”

  3. Tap Save to store the connection.

Best Practice: Always include the port number (:41011) when entering your VPS address. Without it, the app will try to connect on port 3389, which will fail because FXVPS uses a non-standard port for enhanced security.

Step 3: Connect to Your VPS

  1. Back on the main screen, you will see your saved connection listed. Tap on it to connect.
  1. The first time you connect, you will see a certificate verification warning. This is completely normal — your VPS uses a self-signed security certificate.

  2. Check the box for “Don’t ask me again for connections to this computer” so you will not see this warning every time.

  3. Tap Connect.

After a few seconds, your VPS desktop will appear on your Android screen. You are now connected and can see your MetaTrader terminals, manage your EAs, or perform any other task.

Step 4: Navigating Your VPS on a Touchscreen

Using a Windows desktop on a phone screen takes a bit of getting used to. Here are the key gestures and tips:

Touch Controls

  • Single tap = Left click
  • Tap and hold = Right click
  • Pinch to zoom = Zoom in and out on the VPS desktop (essential on phones with small screens)
  • Two-finger drag = Scroll
  • Drag = Move the cursor or drag windows

Using the On-Screen Keyboard

Tap the keyboard icon in the app’s toolbar to bring up the Android keyboard. For special keys like Ctrl, Alt, or Windows key, use the toolbar at the top of the RDP session.

Mouse Pointer Mode

The app offers two input modes:

  • Touch mode (default) — Your finger acts as a direct touch input. This is more intuitive for most users.
  • Mouse pointer mode — A floating cursor appears on screen that you drag around with your finger. This gives more precision for small buttons and is closer to the desktop experience.

Switch between modes using the toggle in the app’s connection toolbar.

💡 Tip: For quick checks on your phone, Touch mode works fine. If you need to do precision work like adjusting EA parameters or placing manual trades, switch to Mouse pointer mode for better control.

Step 5: Disconnect Properly

When you are done checking on your VPS, you need to disconnect — not sign out:

  1. Tap the toolbar at the top of the RDP session (you may need to tap the small arrow or menu icon to reveal it).
  2. Tap the Disconnect or X button.
  3. This closes the connection on your phone but keeps everything running on the VPS.

You can also simply press the Home button on your Android device or switch to another app. The RDP session will disconnect after a short timeout, and your VPS programs will continue running.

⚠️ Warning: Never tap “Sign out” or “Log off” from the Windows Start menu on your VPS. This will close all running programs, including your MetaTrader terminals and Expert Advisors. For a detailed explanation, see our guide on properly disconnecting from RDP.

Connection Settings for Better Performance on Mobile

Mobile connections — especially on cellular data — have higher latency and lower bandwidth than a home broadband connection. Here are settings to optimize the experience:

Reduce Display Quality

  1. In the app, go to the connection settings for your VPS.
  2. Set Resolution to a lower value (e.g., 1024x768 or 1280x720). Your phone screen is small anyway, so high resolutions just waste bandwidth.
  3. Set Color depth to 16-bit instead of 32-bit. The visual difference is barely noticeable on a phone, but it significantly reduces data usage.

Minimize Data Usage

If you are on a metered mobile data plan:

  • Keep your sessions short — connect, check your EAs, disconnect.
  • Avoid dragging windows around or scrolling rapidly, as this generates a lot of screen update data.
  • Do not stream audio from the VPS (disable sound redirection in connection settings).

Optimize for Latency

If the connection feels laggy:

  • Connect to Wi-Fi instead of cellular data when possible.
  • Close other apps on your phone that might be consuming bandwidth.
  • Check that your VPS location is reasonably close to your physical location. This matters more for the RDP experience than for trading latency. See our broker latency page for more on server locations.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Cannot Connect / Connection Timeout

  • Double-check the IP and port — The most common issue is a missing or incorrect port number. Your address should look like 123.45.67.89:41011.
  • Try a different network — Some public Wi-Fi networks and corporate firewalls block RDP traffic on non-standard ports. Switch to mobile data or a different Wi-Fi network.
  • VPS might be down — If you recently requested a reboot or your VPS is undergoing maintenance, wait a few minutes. You can check if your VPS is online by pinging the IP — see our guide on checking VPS status with ping.

Session Disconnects Frequently

  • Mobile networks are inherently less stable than wired connections. Brief disconnections are normal, especially when switching between Wi-Fi and cellular data.
  • If disconnections are very frequent, check your phone’s Wi-Fi signal strength or try connecting from a location with better reception.
  • Your VPS programs continue running during brief disconnections — you just need to reconnect to see the screen again.

Screen Too Small to Read

  • Use pinch to zoom to enlarge the area you are working with.
  • Lower the VPS resolution in the connection settings so everything appears larger.
  • If you frequently manage your VPS from mobile, consider using a tablet instead of a phone for a much better experience.

Keyboard Input Issues

  • Some special characters may not transmit correctly depending on your Android keyboard app. If you have trouble entering passwords with special characters, try using the built-in RDP keyboard toolbar instead of your phone’s default keyboard.
  • For entering your VPS password, you can also save it in the connection settings so you never need to type it on the phone.

Using Android Tablets

If you have an Android tablet, the experience is significantly better than on a phone:

  • The larger screen means you can comfortably view MT4/MT5 charts without constantly zooming.
  • Connect a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse for a near-desktop experience.
  • Tablets are great for monitoring trades while traveling — set your VPS resolution to match the tablet’s native resolution for the clearest display.

Summary

Connecting to your FXVPS server from Android takes under five minutes to set up: install the official Microsoft Remote Desktop app, enter your VPS IP with the port number, save your credentials, accept the certificate, and you are connected. Remember to always disconnect (never sign out) when you are done, and adjust the display settings for a smoother mobile experience.
