Connecting to your FXVPS trading server from a Mac is straightforward once you have the right app installed and configured. Unlike Windows, macOS does not ship with a built-in Remote Desktop client, so you will need to download Microsoft’s free Remote Desktop app from the App Store. This guide walks you through the entire process — from installation through your first connection — including how to handle the certificate warning that trips up many first-time users.
What You Will Need
Before starting, make sure you have:
- Your VPS credentials — After completing payment and activating your VPS, you will receive an email from FXVPS containing your IP address, port number, username, and password.
- A Mac running macOS 12 (Monterey) or later — The current version of Microsoft Remote Desktop requires macOS 12+. Older Macs can use the legacy “Microsoft Remote Desktop 8” app, which is still available but no longer updated.
- An internet connection — Any connection works, but a stable one with low latency will give you the best experience. Wi-Fi is fine for checking on your VPS; wired ethernet is better for extended management sessions.
Step 1: Install Microsoft Remote Desktop
Download and install the official Microsoft Remote Desktop app from the Mac App Store:
Download Microsoft Remote Desktop from the App Store
Click Get and then Install. You may need to sign in with your Apple ID if prompted. The app is completely free.
💡 Tip: Make sure you download the app published by “Microsoft Corporation.” There are third-party RDP clients on the App Store, but the official Microsoft app provides the best compatibility and is regularly updated.
Step 2: Launch the App
Once installed, you can find Microsoft Remote Desktop in your Applications folder:
- Open Finder.
- Click Applications in the sidebar (or press Cmd+Shift+A).
- Scroll down to Microsoft Remote Desktop and double-click to open it.
Alternatively, use Spotlight (Cmd+Space) and type “Remote Desktop” to find and launch the app quickly.
Step 3: Add a New Connection
When the app opens, you will see the main connection screen. To add your VPS:
- Click the + button in the top toolbar, then select Add PC (or go to the menu: Connections > Add PC).
-
In the PC name field, enter your VPS IP address and port number in this format:
IP:Port(for example,123.45.67.89:41011). -
For User account, click the dropdown and select Add User Account. Enter the username and password from your FXVPS activation email. Saving your credentials here means you will not need to type them every time you connect.
-
Give the connection a Friendly name so you can identify it easily — for example, “FXVPS - IC Markets” or “Trading VPS Chicago.”
✅ Best Practice: Always include the port number when entering your VPS address. FXVPS uses port 41011 for RDP connections (not the standard 3389). Forgetting the port is the most common reason a connection fails.
Step 4: Configure Display and Performance Settings
Before connecting for the first time, it is worth adjusting a few settings for a better experience:
Resolution
Under the Display tab of your connection settings, you can choose the resolution. Options include:
- Use all monitors — Fills your entire Mac screen (good for full-screen mode).
- Custom resolution — Set a specific size like 1920x1080 or 1280x720. A lower resolution uses less bandwidth and feels more responsive, especially on slower connections.
For general VPS management, 1280x720 or 1440x900 works well. You do not need Retina resolution to manage MetaTrader terminals.
Color Quality
Set color quality to High (32-bit) for the clearest display, or Medium (16-bit) if you are on a slow connection and want better performance.
Other Settings
- Start session in full screen — Enable this if you want the VPS to take over your entire screen when you connect.
- Swap mouse buttons — Leave this off unless you are left-handed and have your mouse buttons reversed.
Step 5: Connect to Your VPS
- Back on the main connection screen, double-click your saved connection to connect.
- The first time you connect, you will see a certificate warning. This is normal — your VPS uses a self-signed certificate, which macOS does not trust by default.
- Click Show Certificate to view the certificate details.
-
Check the box that says “Always trust [server name]”. This tells your Mac to remember this certificate so you will not see the warning again for this VPS.
-
Click Continue. macOS will ask you to enter your local Mac password (not your VPS password) to save the certificate to your keychain.
- After a moment, you will see your VPS desktop appear. You are now connected and can start setting up your trading platform.
Step 6: Set Up Your Trading Environment
Now that you are connected to your VPS, here are the first things to do:
- Install your broker’s MetaTrader terminal if it is not pre-installed. Download it directly from your broker’s website using the browser on the VPS.
- Log in to your trading account within MT4/MT5.
- Attach your Expert Advisors to the appropriate charts.
- Enable AutoTrading (the green play button in the MT4/MT5 toolbar).
- Set up automatic startup so your terminals restart after any VPS reboot — see our MT4 automatic startup guide.
💡 Tip: Do all your software installation and configuration directly on the VPS, not on your Mac. Your trading software needs to run on the VPS, not your local machine. The Mac is just a window into the VPS.
How to Disconnect Properly
When you are done configuring your VPS and want to leave your EAs running, you need to disconnect rather than sign out:
- In full-screen mode, move your cursor to the top of the screen to reveal the toolbar, then click the X button.
- In windowed mode, click the red close button in the top-left corner of the window.
This closes the Remote Desktop window on your Mac but keeps everything running on the VPS. For a detailed explanation, see our guide on how to properly disconnect from an RDP session.
⚠️ Warning: Never click “Sign Out” from the Windows Start menu on your VPS. This will close all running programs, including your MetaTrader terminals and EAs. Always disconnect using the RDP window controls instead.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
”Unable to connect” or Connection Timeout
- Check the port number — Make sure you included
:41011(or whatever port was in your activation email) after the IP address. - Check your internet connection — Try loading a website in your Mac’s browser to confirm you are online.
- VPS might be restarting — If you recently requested a reboot or the VPS is being updated, wait a few minutes and try again.
- Firewall — Some corporate or hotel Wi-Fi networks block RDP traffic. Try connecting from a different network, or use a VPN.
Blurry or Laggy Display
- Lower your display resolution in the connection settings (try 1280x720).
- Reduce color quality to 16-bit.
- Close other bandwidth-heavy applications on your Mac (video streaming, large downloads).
- If you consistently experience lag, check your network latency to the VPS. See our broker latency page for more context on why location matters.
Keyboard Shortcuts Not Working
Some Mac keyboard shortcuts conflict with Windows shortcuts. The Microsoft Remote Desktop app remaps most keys automatically, but if you find certain shortcuts are not working:
- Use the Cmd key where you would normally use Ctrl on Windows (e.g., Cmd+C for copy).
- For the Windows key, press Fn+F2 or check the app’s keyboard shortcut settings.
Cannot Copy/Paste Between Mac and VPS
Clipboard sharing is enabled by default in the Microsoft Remote Desktop app. If it is not working:
- Open the connection settings for your VPS.
- Under the Devices & Audio tab, make sure Clipboard is checked.
- Disconnect and reconnect for the change to take effect.
Note that some VPS configurations disable clipboard sharing for security. If this is the case, you can use file transfer methods instead.
Summary
Connecting to your FXVPS trading server from a Mac takes just a few minutes: install the free Microsoft Remote Desktop app, enter your VPS IP, port, and credentials, trust the certificate on first connection, and you are in. Save your connection for one-click access going forward, and always disconnect (never sign out) when you are done.
